Can’t wait to see this.
I’ve been a fan of the Nickelodeons' Avatar: The Last Airbender ever since it first aired back in 2005. Its just a bit disappointing that they couldn’t use the Avatar name given the other big film that was released by the same name.
But I guess I can settle for ‘The Last Airbender’. My other piece of disappointment is the fact that M.Night Shyamalan is the director of the film. Don’t get me wrong. M. Night has directed some pretty good films, especially as we talk about ‘The Sixth Sense’. But M. Nights been a bit of hit or miss lately.
Add to that, the fact that they used a 10 year old boy to play Aang. In the American Anime series it was ok to have Aang as a young boy, but in a film I think that it may look a bit stupid. I would have preferred to see a teen Aang, rather than a 10 year old Aang.
In any case, I can’t wait to see what they have done to Avatar: The Last Airbender, even if its just bad.

I watched the trailer and really wanted to be excited for this film.
ReplyDeleteBut I can't forget that the production marginalized minority actors - from the very first cast call. That they carefully selected Caucasian actors for the heroic roles and minorities for the villainous roles.
That the twist ending of this film is likely to be that "men with dark skin can be good guys, too."

As for the "race card," well... I wasn't the one who wrote cast calls asking for heroes who were "Caucasian or any other ethnicity." Or for Fire Nation actors who were "Near Eastern, Middle Eastern, Far Eastern, Mediterranean, or Latino."
I don't feel like the one who brought race into this, you know?
After some investigating it appears that you are right in terms of the casting chooses Paramount made. I really don't know why they would do that. As for saying they're racist, I'm not sure I'm quite ready to put that label on them, but it should be considered. In any case, I think I'll be putting a post up about this on Monday, so I would invite you back to comment on it, once its written.
