FanExpo So Far

Hey guys.  I just got back a little while ago from my second day at the FanExpo and I had a blast.  It is by far the biggest that the convention has ever been and there is a lot of great stuff that is starting to show up at this Expo.  One being special previews of up coming Films and TV shows.

Friday, I was able to sit into a preview for the upcoming Tron film that was just great.  From the limited stuff they showed I have great confidence in there vision for the movie.  Whether they will be able to achieve their vision for Tron we’ll have to decide when the film comes out.

Today, I was able to see a preview for the next series of Heroes.  This season looks awesome.  I have always been a fan of the show, even as it did go down hill for a bit.  I do hope that the series will final start to get back to what made the show great in the first place.

In any case I hope to post a more thorough write up on Monday.  So till then, have a good week end.

What should be the Price of Piracy?

Pirate Over at The Movie Blog, John put up an interesting post yesterday  about how it is actually cheaper to kill someone than it is to Pirate songs online.  I thought that his point was interesting although I do believe he does have it a bit wrong since it is actually the distribution of pirated songs that is illegal (at lest here it is).  But the point is still valid. This got me thinking, “what should we pay for Piracy crimes?”

In our Justice system there is a principle that the punishment should fit the crime.  Now this may waver depending on how the crime is viewed by society, as well as, the age of the person committing the crime.  But, in these lawsuits by the RIAA and the MPAA I don’t believe that this has been the case.  In many cases, since they really don’t have evidence for how many downloads take place, they have only need to prove that the files were being shared to strap someone with very large fines for distributing there content.  And by large I mean in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars for infringement.  Jamie Thomas is just one example of such large fines.

Now, I don’t want anyone to think that I agree with Piracy. Piracy is wrong and should be considered a crime and punished as such.  But I also don’t agree with these massive fines, being levelled against people who have no way of ever paying it.  Two wrongs never make a right and the justice system should reflect this.  That is why,(I believe) that these crimes should have similar consequences to there real life crimes.

If a criminal were to  steal a million dollars in property he would serve probably some jail time and pay a fine for it. The penalty wouldn’t be overly burdensome like the RIAA and MPAA fines, but would be sever enough to stress the point that we don’t want this happening.  But with these large fines how can anyone get out from under it.  I know that the point of these fines is to stress the point for people not to pirate, but it goes a bit to far and has made villains out of the victims of piracy.  So much so that some artist have started speaking out about these RIAA trials  Most notably Moby that recently called for the disbanding of the RIAA.

In any case, unless something is done these lawsuits will continue.  I know of some sites calling for month long boycotts of music from labels covered under the RIAA to protest these lawsuits.  I do have my doubts about the success of these boycotts, as the majority of the public don’t even know of these boycotts and thus will continue to buy music during the month.

I do hope something happens. Before more of these trials go to court.

Megan Fox - "Peer Pressure" PSA

Thoughts on GIJOE

scarlett It now been a week since GIJOE released to theatres in North America and I felt that it was time to finally do an honest discussion of this movie.  I know that most people try to have there reviews earlier, especially as it helps people when they are going to see the film make a decision as to whether or not they will actually see it.  But I felt that I should wait and let people see the film to see how many people feel the same way I do.

GIJOE for me was just ok.  I have seen it twice now since it released so I feel that I have a good grasp on what I liked and disliked about this movie.  For me this film was entertaining enough to watch twice and not feel bored, but it never really excited me.

I went into this film feeling that it wasn’t going to be good given the fact that they hid the film from the critics and none the of trailers really looked all that good. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be, but it wasn’t that good either.  The  action scenes where pretty good.  (I felt that the car chase scene through Paris was probably the best scene of the movie. )   I liked the few jokes that they gave Marlon Wayans (Ripcord).  Seeing  Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols in tight leather was good.  The Snake Eyes and Stormshadow scenes were good.

The things that were bad though I think slightly out numbered the good.  The dialogue was bad in this movie, especially the scene where Scarlet is in the washroom with Ripcord and she is complaining about how she wasn’t perfect, as she got beat by the Baroness. (It was just a bad scene.)

There was also some useless scenes and characters.  The Baroness’s husband was useless. (They didn’t need him.)  The scene with Scarlett complaining in the washroom was unnecessary.  A bunch of the flash backs where pretty useless. ( I know some will disagree, but If you edited out the flashbacks you probably won’t even notice they were gone.)

By now, some of you are probably feeling that I’m being pretty hard on this film and probably I am.  Its very easy to criticise a film if you don’t feel its good.  Its just (and I’ll be honest) I grew up with GIJOE, it wasn’t my favourite show, but I still wanted better for it.  And I didn’t get. The movie was cheesy, which isn’t a bad thing.  I have in the past liked cheesy movies like “Snakes on a Plane” and “Street Fighter” (the Jean Claude Van Damme one).  I think where this film lost me was that it made 2 big errors that took me out of the film.  I think if they changed these 2 things the film would have been better for me.

The first thing that took me out of the film was the bad costumes choices.  I liked the costumes in general, but I hated hated the lips on Snake Eye’s costume.  I think they should have just kept it flat.  Also, they gave Heavy Duty a costume that greatly resembles Blades costume.  Heavy Duty looked so much like Blade that when I saw him in the ship after they leave The Pit for the first time with Ripcord and Duke and Snake Eyes was behind him with this sword out I turned to my friend and said “Blade?”   It took me completely out of the movie.  Then later at Cobra’s Base in the Arctic,  the personal are wearing costumes that look like Starfleet uniforms from Star Trek.  It took me out of the film again.

The second and final thing that just ruined the film for me was the bad effects.  The computer graphics in this film looked dated.  If this film was made it the earlier 90s they may have past, but not today.  The end scene was probably the worst scene for this.  As I watched the submarine battle I thought I was looking at toys fighting in the water.  It was just bad.  They just lost me, which isn’t good at the end of your film.

If they just changed the the bad costumes and effects, I think I would have enjoyed the movie a ton more.  That said they are now making a sequel which I will probably end up seeing since its GIJOE.  But I seriously hope they make some changes to the film.  I want to be able to like the movie.

In any case, I would like to hear your thoughts on this.  Am I being too hard on this movie.

RIP John Hughes

MV5BMTk1MDkyNTM3OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzAxMTY3Mg@@._V1._SX290_SY400_ Yesterday for those that missed it, John Hughes died at the age of 59.  This is a great lose for any child of the 80s, he directed many of the films that we consider to be classics of that era.

From Sixteen Candles to Breakfast Club, John Hughes directed a generation there many of the problems of adolescents.  We will definitely miss him.  Rest in peace John.

Its Been a Long Time

Hey Everyone. I hope you’ve had a get summer.  I know I’ve had a pretty good one so far.  (Well at lest its starting to.)  I’ve worked most of the summer, but now I have lots of time (without a job).  So I thought I should catch up a little.

For those that have been out of the loop, there has been a lot that has happened in the past month.

  • Google had its Google Voice app rejected for duplicating processes (aka it threatened the stream of money they get from AT &T).
  • Microsoft and Yahoo came to a deal on search.  (But no one really cares by this point.  They should have done this last year.)
  • JK got Married and Divorced.  No I need to find a women that is willing to do a little song and dance.
  • GIJOE wasn't screened for critics.  It appears from the current score on Rotten Tomatoes it was done that way for good reason.
  • Mario and Princess sex tape released.  You know that something had to happen after all those games.
  • Seth Rogan had his kiss rejected by Megan Fox.  I don’t blame the boy for trying.
  • Heroes Season 4 Trailer came out.  I’m not sure if its a good thing they are trying to make the cheerleader a lesbian.  Actually, its kind of cheap.
  • We found out Tiffani Amber Thiessen is to busy for a Saved By the Bell reunion on Jimmy Fallon.  I just wished it was a funnier video.
  • We found out how Twilight should have ended.  I wonder if they can do that for the sequel.
  • Walter Cronkite died.  There will be non like him again.
  • We found out Facebook violates Canadian Privacy standards.  I’ve always been a bit worried about those Facebook applications.
  • and on and on.

As you can see a lot happens in a month.  I just hope that I can find the time to talk about this months stories.  I hope I didn’t miss anything to big in this list.

JK Wedding and Divorce Entrance Dance

I know its been a week but they now have a pretty funny follow up video.  But for those that missed it I decided to post both of the videos. Enjoy.
