With all the hype out there over Apples yet unannounced tablet computer, many computer companies have made the decision to hop on the tablet bandwagon and release their own offerings. It appears that Google and HTC are no different.
Gizmodo reported over the weekend, that Google and HTC, whom you will remember have just completed the production of the Nexus One, are reported to have been also working on a tablet device. According to Gizmodo, this new tablet will run on Google's new Chrome OS, which is an open source, internet based operating system, which was designed to run on net books and other small devices.
I think this is a pretty good idea for these two companies to work together on a tablet computer. Certainly, they are not as experience as Apple when it comes to computer hardware, but the difference between a touch screen phone and a tablet computer, aren’t that major. And seeing that Apple likes to lock people in with DRM, Google and HTC could represent a good alternative to Apples locked down device.
My only worry is Chrome OS’s seemingly heavily reliant on the Internet. If the requirement to use the device is access to the Internet, it could cause some problems for those people that need to get work done when there internet goes down.
But all in all, I think that this is good news for us consumers, as Apple needs to start facing more competition in the device space. I have nothing against Apple, but I know that their dominance in the MP3 player market hasn’t been the best thing for use consumers. Apple needs to be challenged to keep them on their toes and innovative. Google could be that competition for Apple that we are looking for.
So what do you think? Will you be buying a Google Tablet?
